Whether they’re our nails or artificial nails, they definitely add a level of class and style to our hands and appearance. Many of us are hard at work and can’t afford to constantly groom our fingernails. Here are all the tips you need to know about basic nail grooming.

  1. Our nails are made of a hard protein called keratin. Nail care help protect the ends of fingers and toes from trauma and also help us pick up small objects; most importantly well-groomed fingernails are beautiful.

  2. When filing nails, go from the corner to the center in one direction. Follow the groove on the side of your nail. Filing this way will allow the nail to grow equally and properly.

  3. Buffing nails provides a shinier finish. Start at the cuticle and work your way down to the tip with light pressure. Don’t buff back and forth, this can cause heat build up, which can damage your nails. Buff lightly, until all ridges on the nail surface are gone.

  4. Before applying any nail polish make sure that nails are clean and dry, free of any oil or lotion.

  5. Always apply the base (clear) coat, and let dry for 1 minute. The base coat supports the nail polish from chipping and allows polish to last longer.

  6. Two coats of polish is the perfect amount.

  7. Drying time in between layers is key to a flawless manicure. Allow 1 minute of dry time before applying next coat. Remember, darker shades take longer to dry.

  8. Avoid fast drying nail polish; it does not last as long.

  9. When the last coat has dried, apply a clear Top Coat to seal it. Continue to apply the Top Coat daily to keep nails looking fresh longer.

  10. Try to stay away from acrylic and powder nails because the carry harmful bacteria, and are difficult to disinfect.

  11. If you seek thicker nails, there are many polishes that moisturize, nourish and provide vitamins to your nails to make them thick and beautiful.

  12. You can also improve your nails through your diet, by eating eggs, flaxseed, fresh fruit, herbal teas, nuts, vegetable and whole grains.

  13. Biotin is a B-complex mineral that can help nails. In fact, it is included as an ingredient in many nails vitamins.

  14. A vitamin E supplement is your best option, because you will have noticeable results.

After a period of time in self nail grooming and care, you will become a manicure specialist; start giving out great nail tips to your closest friends and relatives as well, as they will admire your perfectly polished nails and wish to know your secrets.
